Uninsured Motorist Coverage – Why Your Motorcycle Coverage Should Include It

motorcycle insurance coverageIn the state of Texas, uninsured and/or underinsured motorist is optional.  You may reject the coverage in writing but it is still important to have whether you are in League City or the surrounding Galveston area.   Obviously, you are much more exposed on a motorcycle to injuries and there are lots of drivers who either have no insurance or they carry the state minimum which puts you at risk.

Uninsured and/or underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage will pay for your injuries if you are hit by someone who either does not have liability insurance or does not have enough liability insurance to pay for your injuries that they caused you by their negligence.

Let’s say you’re on your bike while cruising in Kemah or along Galveston Bay and someone hits you while on your motorcycle.  Luckily, you’re not hurt bad, but Lord forbid suffer a few broken bones.   The minimum coverage in Texas is $30,000 per person for bodily injury. That amount doesn’t go very far in today’s medical expense world.  Hopefully the responsible party has more than the minimum, but if they don’t that’s when your underinsured motorist insurance coverage would kick in.

Damage to your motorcycle is unfortunate, but fixable.  Damage to your body can be life changing. When researching your options for motorcycle coverage in the Dickinson, San Leon or Seabrook area don’t forget the most important coverage’s are those that protect your health as well as your assets.

Another bad scenario could be you hit someone on a motorcycle and you are considered the responsible party.  If that driver is injured, even when your minimum required liability limit pays the maximum ($30,000), their uninsured motorist pays the maximum ($30,000) there could still be residual expenses and they can sue you for that, and most likely would.  You could lose your savings, your assets and your retirement accounts.  So hopefully this has made some more sense in the necessity of having additional coverage to protect you and your property and assets regardless of who is at fault.  Don’t skimp by being underinsured just to save a few bucks as it could cost you more in the long run.

Be sure to purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist for yourself and consider carrying more than the state required minimum liability coverage for bodily injury on your own vehicle.  It’s not much more to increase your liability and uninsured motorist benefits on your own policy but it could make a huge difference in an unexpected accident especially one that creates injuries.
